The Wicked Barley

By: Taylor Millstone

The Wicked Barley is more than a brewery, it’s a unique experience. Wicked Barley is a refuge from the stresses of everyday life. You will never have the same experience because they strive to deliver something exceptional, different from the average brewery.

The restaurant has a welcoming, interactive environment. There are multiple tvs inside and a sweet set up outside with a covered patio, a pet friendly garden, and a beautiful waterfront view. Located on Baymeadows, their hours are Monday 4p-10p, Tuesday-Thursday 11a-10p, Friday-Saturday 11a-12a, and Sunday 11a-9p. Their Sunday brunch is something you shouldn’t miss!

The menu includes some classic comfort food like the Kimchi Pork Belly Fries, traditional fries spiced up with a zest of flavors. Their assortment of wings also brings a kick to your palate. They have the traditional buffalo wings along with jerk wings with a strong dry rub and their famous spicy Asian wings that pair well with an IPA.

There are 20 tap beers always available, and dozens of guest beers from across the world that are constantly rotating. If you’re looking for something lighter, they have the amazing “Left Leg German Lager.” If you need something sweeter, they also offer several ales with unique names such as the “Hopeless Romantic” and “Drink Me!” You can also order a variety of wines, both red and white, or sip on a fruity mimosa. Gather your friends and sit outside near the dock so you can enjoy the gorgeous view.

They frequently host exciting events that break out of the typical themes. At the end of December last year, they held an Ugly Sweater Party with a contest awarding the person with the ugliest holiday sweater. The selections were pretty appalling!

Holiday themed beers were exclusively offered live music played most of the night. Memorably, they ran a holiday toy drive to collect unwrapped children’s toys for Ronald McDonald House, a charity that helps kids with critical illness. It was such a fun night that brought together many in Jacksonville.

Regular events are also held with Ladies Night on Thursday from 4-10pm, offering drafts and wines for 4 dollars, and delicious appetizers for only 6 dollars. Mark your calendars every week for Taco Tuesdays, a popular event held from 4-10pm where you can enjoy barbacoa tacos paired with plantains for only 4 dollars. On Wednesdays, celebrate hump day by joining in with friends for pop culture trivia from 7:30p-9:30p and a round of “hoppy hour” with $1 beer, wine, cider and mead.

After great food and brew all week, it’s still important to get moving and stay active. Become a member of the Wicked Road Warriors. Every Tuesday at 6:30p you can take part in their free group run which lasts around 3.5-5 miles. It’s not competitive so you can run or meander at any pace. Every runner will receive one free beer, wine, cider, or mead with the purchase of an entrée. What better motivation to exercise than free brew?

As you can see, Wicked Barley has created a sense of community in Jacksonville that would be hard to replicate elsewhere. Bring old friends to this great hang out and maybe meet some new friends along the way. Great food, awesome brew, and good company!
